Newtown, Staffordshire born inside forward Billy Layton began his senior football career with Shrewsbury Town in 1903 before joining First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers for whom he made his Football League debut against Small Heath in October 1904. He scored once in 17 appearances during his debut season and followed this up with 3 goals in a further 17 appearances in 1905-06, however Wolves were relegated at the end of the season and Layton moved to Southern League Coventry City, where he scored 15 goals in 66 appearances over the next two seasons. He then moved into non league football with Wolverhampton Swifts and Willenhall Pickwick before retirement.
