Glasgow born full back Jim Lawson had been at Port Glasgow Juniors before World War One, joining St Mirren and then Kilsyth Rangers in 1919. He spent part of 1920-21 at Bolton Wanderers but didn’t play for their first eleven, before joining Hartlepools United later in 1920, playing for them in an FA Cup tie at Swansea Town in December 1920, technically his senior debut. He then moved to Roots Hall to join Southend United, making his Football League debut in February 1921 against Luton Town, making a total of 19 appearances for The Shrimpers through till April 1922.
