Liverpool born inside left or centre forward James Lavery began his football career with Merseyside junior club Brynn Central in 1903 before going to Scotland to play for Dumfries in 1904. He returned to Lancashire to join Second Division club Blackpool in 1905, making his Football League debut at Clapton Orient on December 23rd 1905, scoring his first of two goals for The Seasiders two days later in a Christmas Day fixture at Burnley, also scoring against Clapton Orient in a 3-0 home win in April 1906. He scored twice in 23 appearances for Blackpool before leaving professional football in 1907.
