Description

Tipton, Staffordshire born full back Sammy Langford joined Merthyr Town after the First World War, making his Football League debut at Northampton Town in November 1920 and playing 19 times in Merthyr’s inaugural Football League season. He was a near ever present in 1921-22 missing only one match as Merthyr finished mid table in the Third Division (South). In November 1923 Welsh rivals Swansea Town signed him after a single goal in 116 appearances, and the following season he played 14 times as Swansea won the Third Division (South) Championship.

He continued to play regularly for Swansea in the Second Division and appeared in the 1926 FA Cup semi final at White Hart Lane when they lost to eventual winners Bolton Wanderers, but lost his place from the start of 1926-27, and in the 1927 close season he moved to non league Worcester City after 94 appearances, but he returned to Football League action after a single season when he joined Charlton Athletic in the summer of 1928, being ever present for two seasons running and scoring once in 147 appearances over his four seasons at The Valley. In his first season there they won the Third Division (South) Championship in what would pave the way for better times ahead for the South London club. In 1932 he returned to the Black Country joining Walsall, for whom he scored once in 26 appearances before a move to non league Dudley Town in 1933.
