Description

Harthill, near Rotherham, Yorkshire born right back George Laking began his football career with Kiveton Park in 1932 and played for Dinnington Athletic in 1933 before signing for First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1934, making his Football League debut at Grimsby Town in November 1935. He made 29 appearances for Wolves before being bought by Middlesbrough in October 1936, where he was an ever present until October 1938. He scored his only career goal a month earlier in a 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic, however his career was severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, which forced the suspension of peacetime football.

Laking guested for a number of Yorkshire clubs during the War; including Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Doncaster Rovers and Leeds United, before returning to League football with Middlesbrough following the end of the conflict, however he was already well into his thirties. He played 4 times for ‘Boro in FA Cup ties in the 1946 tournament, but only once after League football resumed in 1946-47 in a defeat to Sheffield United in September 1946, leaving Middlesbrough after 104 appearances for Midland League club Shrewsbury Town in the 1947 close season, where he played until retiring two years later.
