Burradon, Northumberland born winger James Kennedy joined Third Division (South) club Portsmouth from north east club Bedlington United in 1921 and made his Football League debut that October against Luton Town, playing 20 times that season. For whatever reason (injury most likely) he didn’t appear again for Pompey until after their promotion two and a half years later in 1924, when he made successive appearances against Crystal Palace on Christmas Day and Boxing Day which proved his last outing for Pompey. He joined Reading in the 1925 close season, making his debut in a convincing win over Watford in November, but only appeared 5 more times towards the end of the 1925-26 season as they won the Third Division (South) Championship, before leaving the professional game.
