Aberdeen born goalkeeper Alex Kane played army football while serving with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers during the First World War, and after his service he played for Scottish League club Broxburn United in 1918. He joined Heart of Midlothian in 1919, making his debut against Queens Park at Tynecastle in August 1919, and he played 120 times over the next three seasons before moving south in the 1922 close season to join Third Division (South) club Reading.
He made his Football League debut at Bristol City that August and was an ever present at Elm Park during his single season at the club, before joining Portsmouth in the summer of 1923 having made 43 appearances. He was then an ever present once more as Pompey won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1923-24, and an ever present in their first season back in the Second Division.
But at the end of October 1925 he lost his place to Dan McPhail, and he soon joined First Division West Ham United as understudy to Ted Hufton, making his Irons debut in January 1926 against Liverpool. He played once more for The Hammers the next season on New Years’ Day 1927 against Derby County before emigrating to Canada, where he played in the nascent Canadian Leagues for Congasgo and Bredins Bread, both teams based in Toronto.
