Description

Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan born inside forward Ivor Jones started his football career with Merthyr Town in April 1915 but his early career was interrupted by the First World War, during which he served in the Army in France. On his return he joined Caerphilly in August 1918 and then signed for Swansea Town for £50 in August 1919, playing in their inaugural Football League match at Portsmouth in August 1920 and winning his first Wales international cap of 10 (scoring once for his country) through till February 1926 in a 2-2 draw with Ireland at The Oval, Belfast in February 1920.

He enjoyed two seasons at The Vetch Field before West Bromwich Albion signed him for £2,500 in April 1922 after 17 goals in 74 appearances for The Swans. He had four seasons at The Hawthorns but increasingly struggled to get into the first team, and returned to Swansea on a free transfer in May 1926 after 10 goals in 67 appearances for The Baggies. However, he couldn’t get into the Swansea first team and joined non league Aberystwyth Town as player-coach in August 1927 but stayed only a season before joining Aldershot in June 1928. That November he joined Thames Association before joining Eastside FC in February 1930.

He finished his playing career with Aberavon Harlequins, joining them in April 1933 and from September 1933 to May 1935 he was a coach at Aberystwyth before finishing with football.

The older brother of Bryn Jones, of Wales, Wolves and Arsenal, he was one of five brothers who all played professional football, the others being Shoni (Aberdare and Ton Pentre),  Emlyn (Merthyr Town, Bournemouth, Southend United and Barrow) and Bert (who died fighting the Japanese in Burma in the Second World War). His sons Brin (Swansea Town, Bournemouth, Watford) and Cliff (Swansea Town, Tottenham Hotspur where he famously won the Double in 1961, Fulham and Wales) were also footballers. His nephew Ken played for Swansea and became a well known sports journalist.
