Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan born left winger Charlie Jones began playing football for Troedyrhiw in 1918, and started his senior career in uninspiring fashion after signing professional with Second Division Cardiff City in August 1919, making his Football League debut and only appearance for The Bluebirds against Stoke City in February 1921 before being released and joining Stockport County in May 1921.
In his first season with The Hatters he scored 9 goals as Stockport won the Third Division (North) in 1921-22. After one short of fifty games and no further goals a transfer to First Division Oldham Athletic followed in March 1923 but he couldn’t save them from relegation at the season end. Two further seasons at Oldham and 58 games (5 goals) were enough to convince Nottingham Forest to sign him in September 1925.
There followed international recognition in 1926, Jones making his international debut in a rare 3-1 Welsh victory over England at Selhurst Park that March, and he was honoured with the Wales captaincy on several occasions, playing in total 8 times for his country over the next seven years.
He played 111 games for Nottingham Forest scoring 22 times before Herbert Chapman’s Arsenal signed him in 1928, and Chapman moved Jones to right half in 1930, being a key player in Chapman’s WM formation, after which he won three League Championship medals in the next four seasons, being a runner up in 1931-32, and that season Jones also received an FA Cup runners up medal in 1932 as The Gunners were controversially beaten by Newcastle United at Wembley (he was unfortunately not selected for their 1930 Cup win) and played 195 matches, scoring 8 goals in total for them before retirement in 1934.
He became manager of Notts County in May 1934 for a year and a half and was also player manager of Braintree Town before finishing with football.
In February 2012, memorabilia from his career sold at auction for over £60,000, including £12,000 for his 1933-34 League Championship medal.
