Description

North Shields, Northumberland born left back Charlie Johnson began his football career with Hylton Rovers in 1900, playing for Wallsend Park Villa in 1901 and Willington Athletic in 1903 before joining First Division Sheffield United in January 1905, making his Football League debut at Everton in February 1906, playing 13 times for The Blades in his breakthrough season. The following season he played 28 matches as Sheffield United finished 4th in the League Championship, however Johnson lost his regular left back berth in November 1907 and remained a fringe player at Bramall Lane for two further seasons, playing only three matches for the club in 1909-10, his final match of 74 for The Blades coming at Nottingham Forest in February 1910.

He remained at Bramall Lane until the summer of 1910, when he returned to north east football joining North Eastern League South Shields, and in 1912 he moved on to Jarrow Caledonians before the onset of the First World War in 1914. After the War, already aged 35, he made a surprising return to Football League action when in October 1919 he re-joined South Shields on a short contract, by now in their inaugural season as a Second Division club, playing 4 matches that month including two wins and a draw before retiring from professional football.
