Wombwell, Barnsley born centre half William Jenkinson played for Wombwell Town in 1900 before joining Second Division Gainsborough Trinity, for whom he made his Football League debut at Preston North End on Christmas Day 1901. He became a stalwart for Trinity, and played ten seasons for the club, becoming club captain and scoring 14 times in 309 appearances. Described as “one of the most reliable half backs in League II. Very keen and shows marked ability in breaking up combinations”, he played his last game in February 1911 and retired thereafter (probably due to injury).
