Newton, Lanarkshire born left half Gavin Jarvie played junior football for Cambuslang Rangers in 1900 before joining Scottish League club Airdrieonians in 1901, staying three seasons at Broomfield Park before heading south to join Southern League club Bristol Rovers in 1904. He was a member of the Rovers team that won the 1904-05 Southern League Championship, still the club’s only major honour, scoring once in 89 appearances for them before joining First Division Sunderland in the 1907 close season. He made his Football League debut against Manchester City that September, spending five years on Wearside and scoring twice in 100 appearances for Sunderland, before returning to Scotland to play for Hamilton Academical in 1912.
