Described as “fast, tricky and resourceful”, Brixham, Devon born outside left Augustus “Gus” Huxford began his football career with Grimsby St John’s, from where he joined Second Division club Grimsby Town, making his Football League debut at Gainsborough Trinity in April 1910, the final match of Grimsby’s season as they failed in their re-election bid and lost their League status. The following season Huxford scored 7 goals in 8 matches as The Mariners won the Midland League Championship, and were re-elected to the Football League. Huxford then played 11 matches in their 1911-12 campaign, scoring in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea in October 1911.
Released, he joined Goole Town in 1912 and played for Midland League club Castleford Town in 1913 before re-joining Grimsby Town in 1914, making 3 more first team appearances in February and March 1915, but the onset of the First World War then forced the suspension of peacetime football in May that year. After the War Huxford returned to Blundell Park and scored the only goal in a win at Barnsley in February 1920, one of 4 matches in which he featured in Grimsby’s first post war season.
Released again in the summer of 1920 after 9 goals in 27 matches for Grimsby Town, he joined non league Charlton’s of Grimsby, and played for Midland League club Worksop Town in 1921 before a further season with Charlton’s, subsequently playing for Brigg Town in 1923 and Louth Town in 1924 before his eventual retirement.
His son Harold Huxford was on the books of Grimsby Town in the mid 1930’s without playing for the first team, but played for Hull City in 1938-39, and for Boston United, and then after the Second World War Peterborough United.
