Description

Renfrew born goalkeeper Alex Hunter had been with Renfrew Juniors prior to the First World War and joined Scottish amateur club Queen’s Park in 1918. He made his Scottish League debut for The Spiders in a 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock that August, and played 63 matches for Queen’s Park, and playing in two Merchants’ Charity Cup Finals, both lost by the odd goal to Rangers and Celtic respectively in May 1919 and May 1920, before joining newly promoted First Division club Tottenham Hotspur in May 1920.

He made his Football League debut against League Champions West Bromwich Albion in February 1921 in place of Bill Jacques, keeping a clean sheet. In his first season at Spurs Hunter kept goal in the 1921 FA Cup Final keeping another clean sheet as Tottenham beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 to win the Cup at Stamford Bridge.

However he faced stiff competition for the gloves especially when Herbert Blake arrived at the club, and he made a total of 27 appearances between the sticks for Spurs before joining Third Division (North) club Wigan Borough in May 1922, where he played a further two seasons making 45 appearances before returning north to Scottish League club Armadale in 1924. A year later he joined the exodus to the nascent North American Soccer League joining New Bedford Whalers, his last recorded club.
