Bury born centre forward Tommy Howarth joined his hometown professional club in 1912 but failed to make their first eleven, moving to Second Division Bristol City in 1913 and making his Football League debut at Notts County in January 1914. He played both sides of World War One for Bristol City, scoring 22 goals in 57 matches at Ashton Gate before Leeds United signed him in March 1921. He enjoyed 18 months at Elland Road scoring 19 goals in 46 games before Bristol Rovers signed him in November 1922. However he scored only 5 times in 24 appearances over the remainder of the 1922-23 season before joining non league Lovells Athletic in 1923.
