Ecclesfield, Sheffield born outside right James Hobson played junior football for Ecclesfield Church in 1903 before joining Midland League club Rotherham County in 1904. He then played for Ecclesfield Town in 1905 and Worksop Town in 1906 before he was signed by First Division Sheffield United in 1907, making his Football League debut against Manchester United in January 1908.

A fringe player at Bramall Lane, he scored twice in 15 appearances for The Blades over the next two seasons but joined Leicester Fosse in the 1909 close season, where he didn’t make a first team appearance, joining Southern League New Brompton later in 1909. He then moved to Midland League club Grimsby Town in 1910, before spending part of 1911-12 at Bolton Wanderers, for whose first team he never got selected, thereafter ending his football career.
