Hoveringham, Nottinghamshire born inside forward Ernest Hitchcock played for Staveley Town in 1906 before joining Aston Villa in February 1907, spending the rest of 1906-07 at Villa Park without making a first team appearance. He joined Southern League Queen’s Park Rangers in the 1907 close season, and was part of their squad that won the 1907-08 Southern League Championship, after which he joined First Division Manchester City. He made his Football League debut for City at Leicester Fosse in March 1909, but never played again for them and there are no records as to his ongoing football career thereafter.
