Swindon, Wiltshire born goalkeeper Freddy Hinton had been an amateur on hometown Southern League club Swindon Town’s books prior to the First World War and turned professional for them after the War in 1919, playing 41 times in 1919-20 before signing for First Division Bolton Wanderers in August 1920, for whom he made his Football League debut at Manchester United later that same month.

His four seasons at Burnden Park saw him generally understudy to Dick Pym, he made his final appearance of 36 against Tottenham Hotspur in September 1923, and it was to Spurs that he moved on in June 1924. He was ever present for Tottenham in 1924-25 but lost his place in February 1926 after 64 appearances for The Lilywhites. He returned to Swindon Town in September 1928 but didn’t make another first team appearance for them before retiring from the game.
