Eckington, Derbyshire born right winger Billy Haywood played junior football for Eckington Works in 1920 before joining First Division Chelsea in March 1921, making his Football League debut against Aston Villa in April 1922, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory. However he remained a fringe player during his three seasons at Stamford Bridge, scoring once in 16 matches during 1922-23 and twice in 23 appearances overall for The Pensioners before joining Halifax Town in May 1924.

The move was not a success and he only played once for The Shaymen in December 1924, before joining non league Yeovil & Petters United the following year. He returned to Football League action first with Portsmouth in May 1926, where he didn’t make the first team, and next with Barrow in November 1926, where he scored once in 10 appearances, before moving to non league Weymouth in 1927, joining Midland League Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1928, before playing for Wombwell in 1929 and Denaby United in 1930, his last club before his retirement from the game.
