Luton born inside forward Fred Hawkes joined Second Division Luton Town in 1899 from Luton Stanley and made his debut in March 1900 against Loughborough, scoring in a 4-0 win. He played once more that season against Lincoln City, before Luton returned to the Southern League the following season. Hawkes played for Luton both sides of World War One, he scored 22 goals in 509 games in a career that spanned over 20 years. After the conflict, he returned to Kenilworth Road and played a final fourteen appearances in 1919-20’s Southern League campaign, retiring immediately before their promotion to the Football League in the summer of 1920 already aged 39. His older brother Thomas also played for Luton Town, although they were not related to Luton’s famous 1900’s captain Bob Hawkes, alongside whom he would have played several hundred games.
