Basford, Nottinghamshire born right back Ernie Hatfield began his football career with Frickley Colliery in 1926 and played for Wombwell in 1927 before joining First Division Sheffield Wednesday in 1928, making his Football League debut and his only appearance for The Owls against West Ham United in April 1929. Released, he joined non league Sheppey United in the summer of 1929 before signing for Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1930.
He made only 4 appearances for Wolves in 1930-31, before joining Southend United in the 1931 close season, where he helped Southend finish third in the Third Division (South) at the end of 1931-32. He scored 3 goals in 57 appearances over two seasons at The Kursaal, before joining non league Dartford in 1933. He then joined Upton Colliery in 1934 where he finished his playing days.
