Description

Stoke on Trent born goalkeeper Ted “Gunner” Hankey began his senior football career on the books of Charlton Athletic in 1935-36 as an amateur, but having failed to break through into their first team he left football to join the Army in 1936. He joined Southend United in October 1937 and made his Football League debut at Walsall in January 1938 in a resounding 5-1 victory, deputising for George MacKenzie, but he didn’t appear again until April, when he played a further 5 games for The Shrimpers. The following season he made a further 16 appearances before the Second World War significantly interrupted his career.

After the War he returned to Southend and missed only four games in their first post War season. He shared goalkeeping duties during the next two seasons with Paddy Nash, but was the principal glovesman in 1949-50, playing 35 matches as Southend finished third in the Third Division (South). By now aged 36, he joined non league Tonbridge in 1950 after 134 appearances for The Shrimpers either side of the War, before his eventual retirement.
