Sheffield born centre forward John Hammerton joined Second Division Barnsley from junior team Oughtibridge in 1920, making his debut at Rotherham County in February 1921. It was his only appearance that season, however he got back into the side at the start of the next season and played most every game for the rest of the year. Besides 2 games in February 1922 he had to wait a year for another spell in the first team, playing 5 games over Christmas and New Year 1922-23. However after 9 goals in 30 Tykes appearances he joined Rotherham County in the summer of 1923, playing 3 seasons at Millmoor and scoring an excellent 24 league goals in his first season, when Rotherham finished 4th in Dvision 3 (North). He scored 38 goals in 71 games at County, before a move back to Barnsley in 1926 and thereafter to Oldham Athletic saw him fail to break into either first eleven. He then joined Midland League York City in 1927, going on to play for Mansfield Town in 1928.
