Crawshawbooth, Lancashire born centre half Fred Halstead signed for Second Division Blackpool in 1920 from Nottinghamshire junior team Welbeck Colliery, making his Football League debut at Bury in August 1920, the first game of the new season. However this proved to be his only game for The Seasiders, and he moved to Southend United the following summer. His single season in Essex saw The Shrimpers finish bottom and they had apply for re-election, Halstead scoring 3 goals in 25 games before a move to Teeside with Hartlepools United in the summer of 1922. He had played only 8 times for Hartlepools when Tranmere Rovers signed him in February 1923, and he played two further full seasons at Prenton Park scoring twice in 89 appearances before joining non league Folkestone in 1925, returning north to join Mossley a year later.
