Wardley Colliery, Gateshead born inside right Ernie Greenwell played football for Easington Colliery Welfare in 1919 before joining local professional Second Division club South Shields in October 1920, making his Football League debut at West Ham United in May 1921. Although never a regular, he scored 17 goals in 62 appearances for South Shields before joining Durham City in August 1927, for whom he had a single season scoring 5 goals in 38 appearances before re-joining Easington Colliery Welfare in 1928.
