Description
Barking, Essex born left half Les Gordon played junior football for Grimsby Rovers in 1922 before spells on the books at Sheffield United in 1923 and Crystal Palace in 1925, where at both clubs he failed to make the first eleven. After a spell at Midland League club Shirebrook in 1926 he joined Second Division club Nottingham Forest the following year, making his Football League debut at Hull City in October 1927. The Derby Daily Telegraph thought he had “height and weight on his side but lack[ed] something in steadiness in front of the sticks.”
He made just 2 appearances for Forest before returning to Shirebrook, but in January 1929 returned to Football League action with Third Division (South) club Brighton & Hove Albion, where he came into the first team in January 1929 and made 18 appearances for The Seagulls before the end of the season. In December, he broke his leg in a Southern League match, an injury that finished his senior career at the age of 26, before returning to non league football with Cleethorpes UDC Buses in the summer of 1930.
