Description

Saltcoats, Ayrshire born Jimmy Gordon played with juvenile sides Thornwood Athletic and Renfrew Victoria before joining Glasgow Rangers during the 1906-07 season, making his Scottish League debut against Kilmarnock in April 1907. He stayed with the Ibrox club until 1920, playing 334 games and winning five Scottish League Championships in the process. Versatile enough to play in any position on the pitch, he did just that playing in goal, in defence where he regularly featured at full back, in midfield and up front as a centre forward for Rangers.

His favoured role was right half and this was the position he occupied most during his international career with Scotland, which extended to ten caps between March 1912, when he made his international debut in a 4-1 win over Ireland at Windsor Park, Belfast and April 1920, when he played in Scotland’s 5-4 defeat at Hillsborough. Gordon also represented The Scottish League 15 times between October 1909 and March 1920, scoring twice in a 5-0 win over The Southern League in October 1913, and played in four unofficial Victory internationals in 1919, playing twice against Ireland and twice against England.

Gordon served as a Sergeant in The Highland Light Infantry during the First World War and guested for Fulham and Heart of Midlothian, making one Scottish League appearance for Hearts in a 2-0 win at Hibernian in April 1917. After 65 goals in 334 appearances for The Gers, winning the Scottish League Championship five times with them, he joined Dunfermline Athletic in the summer of 1920, where he played out his career.

He was included in the Rangers Hall of Fame on 5th February 2007.

NB he is most likely the father of Jimmy Gordon, who played for Newcastle United and Middlesbrough from the 1930’s to the 1950’s, but this is unconfirmed.
