Wensley, near Leyburn, Yorkshire born inside right Kenneth “Ernie” Gillatt played in East Midlands non league football both sides of the First World War beginning his football career with Hartshay Colliery in 1914 and playing for Matlock Town in 1919, before joining Second Division Clapton Orient in the summer of 1920, making his Football League debut against Leicester City that August. He scored 6 goals in 63 matches in East London before a move to First Division Burnley in 1923 but he played only once in the top flight, at Liverpool in September 1923, before he signed for Midland League club Mansfield Town that November.

He helped Mansfield Town to back to back Midland League Championships, scoring 10 goals in 35 appearances, but before the Championship had been retained Gillatt returned to Football League action, signing for Second Division Barnsley for £175 in February 1925. His two seasons at Oakwell saw limited opportunities, and he scored once in 13 appearances before moving to back to The Midland League with Grantham in 1926, his final recorded club before his eventual retirement.
