Description

Lichfield, Staffordshire born goalkeeper Noel George had been with Hednesford Town before the outbreak of World War One, but after the War he signed for Wolves in the summer of 1919, initially he was understudy to Teddy Peers, eventually making his debut in the FA Cup 2nd round against Derby County in February 1921 on the way to the FA Cup Final when, in only his 14th first team game, they narrowly lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. He soon established himself as first choice Wolves goalkeeper being ever present the following season and making a total of 242 appearances, keeping 73 clean sheets.

George started to miss a number of games through injury in the 1925-26 and 1926-27 seasons and by November 1927 when he played his last game for Wolves he was in the early stages of a terminal illness and he retired in 1928. It was diagnosed as a disease of the gums and he died in 1929 aged 32. His manager at Wolves, Major Frank Buckley was convinced that his death was a result of ill-fitting dentures and from then on he ensured any of his players with dentures made regular visits to the dentist.
