Description

Coatbridge, Lanarkshire born centre half Charlie Gavin played junior football for Ashfield Juniors before joining Aberdeen in June 1933, making his Scottish League debut when Aberdeen lost 6-5 at Falkirk in September 1933. In three seasons at Aberdeen he only had 17 senior outings due to the consistency of Eddie Falloon, and the lack of opportunities led to him requesting a transfer, joining Arbroath for £350 in December 1936.

At Gayfield Park he had far more opportunity and soon established a reputation as an excellent centre half, being described as  “serving up top class football”… “strong with head and feet”… and “reckoned to be the best pivot in Scotland”. But his career was severely interrupted by the Second World War’s outbreak in September 1939, during which he returned to play for Aberdeen making a further 57 appearances for them in Wartime football, as well as playing for Clyde, Albion Rovers and Dumbarton.

After the War he returned to Arbroath in 1945 before joining Irish League Ballymena in the 1947 close season. He joined Wick Academy in September 1948 and played briefly for Keith before heading south to join Southern League club Weymouth in October 1948, his last club before his retirement.
