Dipton, County Durham born left back Jim Gallagher began his football career prior to the First World War playing for Dipton United, but after the War he signed for First Division Middlesbrough in May 1919, making his Football League debut, and only ‘Boro appearance, in a 4-2 home defeat by Manchester United in April 1921. Released, he joined Third Division (South) Millwall in June 1921, but similarly only managed a single first team appearance for The Lions, in a win at Brighton & Hove Albion in May 1922.

Gallagher returned to the north east joining non league Wallsend Town in the summer of 1922, before returning to League action by signing for Durham City in August 1923. A regular for three seasons at Holiday Park, he scored 3 goals in 76 appearances before joining North Eastern League club Workington in 1926, finishing with professional football.
