Description

Sheffield born centre half Frank Froggatt began his football career before the First World War playing for Rose Athletic and after the War he played for Attercliffe in 1919, Denaby United in 1920 and Worksop Town in 1921. Second Division club Sheffield Wednesday had signed him from Denaby United and he made his Football League debut against Bradford Park Avenue in October 1921.Froggatt became the first local born player to captain Sheffield Wednesday since Tommy Crawshaw when he became Club Captain in 1925-26, when an ever present in their Second Division Championship winning season.

However promotion to the First Division led to him losing his place in the team, although he did score his only goal for Wednesday in the top flight in a defeat at Leicester in September 1926, and he was sold to Notts County in November 1927 after 95 appearances for The Wednesday. He had three and a half seasons at Meadow Lane, missing only two matches as they finished fifth in the Second Division in 1928-29, and although they were relegated in 1930, he won the Third Division (North) Championship with them at the first time of asking in 1930-31 before transferring to Chesterfield in the 1931 close season after 118 matches in The Magpies’ black and white stripes, scoring once for them in a defeat at Millwall in December 1928.

He played 32 matches for The Spireites during three seasons at Saltergate before moving to Midland League club Scarborough in 1934, and later played for Manchester North End in 1935 before his eventual retirement.

He was the father of England international and Sheffield Wednesday 1940’s and 50’s stalwart Redfern Froggatt, but didn’t live long enough to see him play for The Owls. His nephew Jack Froggatt was also an England international and played during the 1940’s and 50’s for Portsmouth and Leicester City.
