Description

Handsworth, Birmingham born centre forward Walter Freeman started his football career with Aston Manor in 1903 and joined Lowestoft Town in 1904. While a Lowestoft player, he represented Suffolk County in a match against Norfolk. before signing professional forms for hometown First Division club Aston Villa in May 1905, where his brother Bert was already on the books. However he didn’t make a first eleven appearance for Villa and joined Fulham in January 1906. He scored 10 goals from 28 matches to help Fulham win the 1906-07 Southern League Championship, before being a member of their squad that joined the Football League in 1907.

Freeman made his Football League debut on the opening day of Fulham’s first season at that level, and in the next match, a 1-0 win at Derby County on 7th September 1907, he scored both his and Fulham’s first ever Football League goal. He played two seasons for Fulham in The Football League, scoring 12 goals in 23 appearances, before returning to his hometown to join Second Division club Birmingham in September 1909 after 22 goals in 57 appearances for The Cottagers. At St Andrews he missed only one match of what remained of Birmingham’s 1909-10 season, initially playing at centre forward and then switched to inside right, and scored 10 goals, which was enough to make him the club’s top scorer. They finished bottom of the table, and had to apply for re-election to the League.

With the arrival of forwards including Jack Kidd, Thomas Jones and the prolific Jack Hall, Freeman played little in 1910-11 and had scored 11 goals in 38 matches by the time he joined Birmingham & District League club Walsall in 1911, subsequently having a spell at Wellington Town in 1914 before his eventual retirement.

His brother, Bert Freeman, became a prolific goalscorer for Woolwich Arsenal, Everton, Burnley and Wigan Borough, and played five times for England.
