Barking born inside left or left half Dick Foss started his football career on the books of first Thames Association in 1931-32 and then Tottenham Hotspur in 1932-33 without making a first team appearance for either club. He joined non league Enfield in 1933, playing for Southall in 1934 before joining First Division Chelsea in May 1936, for whom he made his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday in February 1937. He had played only 26 first team games as a fringe player during his early Chelsea career, scoring 3 times in the spring of 1938, when the advent of the Second World War interrupted his career for 6 years, but he resumed his Chelsea career after the conflict playing 5 FA Cup ties in the 1945-46 competition and making a further 17 appearances through to January 1948.
