Chingford, Essex born left winger Ernest Ford joined Ilford from Woodford Town in 1921, and his performances brought him to the attention of First Division West Bromwich Albion, who signed him on amateur forms in December 1922. He played a single First Division match for The Baggies, in March 1923 against Sheffield United in a 4-0 win at The Hawthorns, but despite the result he never made another appearance in their first eleven. He retired in May 1923.
