Hucknall, Nottinghamshire born inside right Fred Fisher started his football career with junior clubs Hucknall YMCA in 1927, playing for Staveley Town then Newark Town in 1928 before joining Second Division Notts County in May 1929. He scored on his Football League debut in a 4-2 defeat at West Bromwich Albion in November 1929 and played twice more in a season that saw Notts County relegated, after which he joined Torquay United in May 1930.

He had a single season at Plainmoor, scoring once in 7 appearances, before returning to the East Midlands to join Mansfield Town in June 1931, where in two seasons he remained mainly a reserve, despite scoring on his debut at Southend in March 1932 and scoring 6 times in his 10 appearances. He joined Swindon Town in May 1933 and grabbed 15 goals in their 1933-34 campaign but did less well the next season and by the time he joined Gillingham in July 1935 his record was 19 goals in 51 appearances at The County Ground.

He finished his professional career with single season spells at Gillingham (6 goals in 18 appearances during 1935-36) and Clapton Orient (2 goals in 3 appearances in 1936-37) before joining non league Dudley Town in 1937, subsequently playing for Bestwood Colliery and Newport (Isle of Wight).
