Seaton Burn, Northumberland born right back Ted Ferguson began his football career with Seaton Burn prior to the First World War, but after the conflict he joined North Eastern League club Ashington in 1919, from where he was signed by First Division club Chelsea in March 1920, making his Football League debut against Blackburn Rovers in May 1921. It was Ferguson’s only appearance for Chelsea until September 1922, when he played at Middlesbrough, but from late March 1923 to the season end he enjoyed a run of 9 further matches at inside left and outside right. However he didn’t appear in their 1923-24 campaign and returned to Ashington, by now a League club, in June 1924.
Ferguson had four seasons of regular football with Ashington where he played only at right back, scoring 4 goals, 3 of them penalties, in 125 appearances. He then joined Nelson in August 1928 and had two seasons with The Admirals, making 68 appearances, before moving to non league Annfield Plain in 1930. He subsequently played for Seaton Burn Welfare in 1933 before his eventual retirement.
His younger brother, Robert, also played for Nelson in the late 1920’s.
