Rhyl born full back Jimmy Evans had been at Welsh clubs Rhyl United and Ton Pentre both sides of World War One, but in 1920 he joined Southend United, making his debut in their inaugural Football League match at Brighton & Hove Albion in August that year. In February 1922 he won the first of 4 caps for Wales through to the following March when he played for his country against Scotland. First Division Burnley signed him late in April 1923 and he made his Burnley debut in the last match of their league campaign, but failed to establish himself as a regular starter over the next 2 seasons playing only 20 times, before he moved to Swansea Town in 1925. He only made 7 appearances at The Vetch Field before joining non league Rhyl Athletic in 1926.
