Description

Govan, Glasgow born centre half Frank Dunlop began his football career with Benburb and signed for Scottish First Division Aberdeen in May 1936, making his debut that August in a 4-1 win at St Mirren. He was a tough defender with great leadership qualities and soon established himself as a first team regular. In his debut season he played in Aberdeen’s losing 1937 Scottish Cup Final team when they lost 2-1 to Celtic in front of 147,000 Hampden Park spectators.

Despite losing much of his playing days to the Second World War he returned to Pittodrie after the Second World War as the club captain,  leading them to the inaugural Scottish League Cup Final in 1947, where they were beaten 4-0 by Rangers. Any such disappointment was soon forgotten as he captained Aberdeen to their first Scottish Cup win when they beat Hibernian 2-1 in the 1947 Final at Hampden Park two weeks later.

Described as “a fine, forcing type of player”, Dunlop scored twice in 181 matches for Aberdeen both sides of the War before retiring in 1948, emigrating to South Africa where he was manager of the Southern Rhodesia team which won the Currie Cup in 1959.
