Description

Collyhurst, Manchester born right half Dick Duckworth played for Stretford in 1902 and from there joined Second Division club Manchester United making his Football League debut for the club on 19th December 1903 against Gainsborough Trinity, scoring in a 4-2 victory, his only appearance of the campaign. In 1904-05 he was tried as a centre forward during the run in to the campaign’s end, and he scored a hat-trick as United beat Doncaster Rovers 6-0 at Old Trafford on 1st April, scoring 6 of his 11 goals for United in the space of 6 games in the forward line, before he reverted to right half.

He played 10 matches the following season as United won promotion to the First Division in 1906 but it was only when they arrived in the First Division that he established himself as a first team regular. He helped the club win the League Championship in 1908 and the FA Cup in 1909, when they beat Bristol City 1-0 in the Final at The Crystal Palace, as well as the League Championship again in 1911, playing in both their 1908 and 1911 FA Charity Shield victories over Queen’s Park Rangers and Swindon Town respectively.

He was twice called up to the England squad, on both occasions he was a non playing reserve, firstly against Scotland at St James’ Park in April 1907, and then against Wales at The City Ground, Nottingham in March 1909. He also represented The Football League five times between October 1910 and February 1912. He played his final match for the club on 15th November 1913 against Middlesbrough, and retired soon after due to injury, having scored 11 goals in 254 appearances for The Red Devils over eleven seasons at Old Trafford.
