Geddington, Northamptonshire born outside left Joe Dix began his football career with local Southern League club Kettering but after they dropped into the Northamptonshire League Dix joined Portsmouth, where he established himself over five seasons at Fratton Park. He joined Second Division Clapton Orient in the 1910 close season, making his Football League debut against Derby County that September, and he was a regular in all five of Orient’s seasons ahead of the suspension of peacetime football due to the onset of the First World War in May 1915, bu when he had scored 11 goals in 155 appearances for The O’s. The War in effect finished his career, and he didn’t return to professional football in its aftermath.
