Description

Edmonton, Middlesex born outside left Jimmy Dimmock played junior football with Park Avenue in 1915, Gothic Works in 1916 and Edmonton Ramblers in 1917. He assisted Clapton Orient as a wartime guest and served during the First World War as a gunner with The Royal Field Artillery before he turned professional with Second Division Tottenham Hotspur in May 1919, and he made his Football League debut at Lincoln City on October 4th that year. He played 31 matches in his debut season as Tottenham won the Second Division Championship, although undoubtedly his most memorable season was the season that followed.

He was a near ever present in 1920-21, missing only one match as Tottenham won the 1921 FA Cup Final with the Final against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge being settled by his goal eight minutes into the second half, despite sustaining an injury early in the game. He then helped Spurs to win The Charity Shield the next month as they beat League Champions Burnley 2-0 at White Hart Lane.  He was an ever present in each of the following two seasons as Tottenham finished runners up in the League Championship to Liverpool in 1921-22. His best goalscoring season for Spurs came in 1926-27 when he was the club’s top goalscorer with 20 goals

Dimmock holds a unique place in the history of Tottenham Hotspur by being the only player in the club’s history to play 400 League games and score 100 League goals. He also remains (at 20 years 139 days) the youngest Tottenham player to appear in an FA Cup Final.

Dimmock made his England international debut against Scotland in a 3-0 defeat at Hampden Park on April 9th, 1921 at the age of 20 years and 125 days to become the youngest Spurs player (at that time) to play for England, only a fortnight before he appeared for Spurs in the FA Cup Final against Wolves. Surprisingly, he had to wait five years to gain his 2 further international caps, against Wales and Belgium in March and May 1926.

When he was released by Spurs in 1931 he had scored 100 goals in 400 League games, and 12 in 38 FA Cup matches, and 112 goals in 440 appearances in total. He subsequently played one season for soon to be defunct Thames Asoociation, scoring 14 goals in 39 appearances and then has a season with Clapton Orient, scoring 3 times in 19 games, before joining non league Ashford Town in March 1934, subsequently playing for Tunbridge Wells Rangers in October 1934 before his eventual retirement in 1936.
