Description

Sheffield born full back Wally Dickinson (he could play both sides) started his football career with Craven Sports in 1914 and played for Goole Town in 1916 during the First World War, from where he joined Bradford Park Avenue in March 1917 making his Football League debut against Everton in September 1919. He was an ever present during their relegation season of 1920-21 and by the time he moved to Sheffield Wednesday in August 1922 he had made 120 appearances for Avenue. His single season at Wednesday produced a mere 8 appearances for The Owls, before he moved to Swindon Town in June 1923, staying seven seasons at The County Ground.

At Swindon he was a regular member of the team, missing one game in 1925-26 and being an ever present in 1928-29. He also started taking penalties, and hence he appeared regularly on their goalscoring lists, scoring 21 times of which 20 were penalties (perhaps the other a rebound?) in 252 appearances, and being part of the Swindon team that managed top 6 finishes (but no promotion) five seasons in a row between 1924 and 1928, but he lost his place in October 1929 before his playing retirement in the summer of 1930.
