Description

Kingswood, Bristol born goalkeeper Bill Demmery started his football career with local junior club Warmley in 1903, joining Bristol East in 1904, from where he signed for Second Division club Bristol City as understudy to Harry Clay. He made his Football League debut against Manchester United in December 1905 and played twice as City were promoted as Second Division Champions.

He displaced Clay in October 1906 playing 32 matches in the 1906-07 season as Bristol City finished runners up in the League Championship (the club’s highest ever finish), however 5 games into the new season, after a 3-5 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in September 1907 he was dropped in favour of Clay and only played once more for the Ashton Gate club the following February before joining Southern League neighbours Bristol Rovers at the end of the 1907-08 season after 40 appearances for The Robins.

He played at Eastville for two seasons, and played for both Douglas and Treharris in 1910 and for Aberdare Town in 1911, joining Welsh club Mid Rhondda in 1912. He returned to Treharris in 1913 and played again for Mid Rhondda in 1914, and was still fit enough after the First World War to appear for Douglas in 1919, already aged 42, where he finished his career.
