Preston born winger Herbie Danson played for junior club Freehold Athletic in 1901 and from there joined Second Division Preston North End in November 1902, making his debut in an FA Cup tie at Millwall Athletic in February 1903, his only first team appearance of his first spell at Deepdale. He joined Southport Central that summer but returned to (by now First Division) Preston in 1905 and made his Football League debut in February 1906 at Manchester City, scoring in each of his next 2 appearances against Liverpool and Notts County. Thereafter he was a first team regular over the next 6 seasons before joining non league Nelson in 1912 after Preston were relegated at the end of the 1911-12 season, finishing his career with Lancaster Town who he joined in 1913. He scored a total of 23 goals for Preston in 165 appearances.
