Kilwinning, Ayrshire born left back Sam Currie joined local junior club Kilwinning Rangers in 1906 and had a trial with St Mirren in 1908 before heading south to join Second Division club Leicester Fosse in May 1909, making his Football League debut at Birmingham in March 1910. He played both sides of the First World War for Leicester Fosse and was an ever present during Leicester’s first peacetime season after the War, being appointed club captain, scoring 6 goals in 248 appearances for The Foxes over 13 years with the club, during which time he also made a further 123 wartime appearances during the War. He finished his career in the Third Division with Wigan Borough signing for them in May 1922, scoring 3 times in 39 appearances for the club over the next two seasons before being appointed player-coach of the reserve team in March 1924.
His brothers Bob and Duncan Currie were both footballers. Bob played for amongst others Middlesbrough, Bury and Heart of Midlothian. Duncan played with him at Hearts and during the First World War was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st 1916.
