Belfast born wing half Bill Corkhill played junior football for Northern Nomads in 1929 and Marine in 1930 and signed amateur forms with Liverpool in January 1931 without ever making the first eleven at Anfield. He joined Second Division Notts County in May 1931 making his Football League debut at Barnsley in February 1932 and established himself as a first team regular from 1934. He joined Cardiff City in the summer of 1938 after 10 goals in 176 appearances, playing for Cardiff until the outbreak of the Second World War, making 27 appearances.

He returned to Meadow Lane in November 1945 playing seven more seasons and scoring once in 108 further appearances for The Magpies before retirement. He became Scunthorpe United’s manager in January 1952 leading them for five seasons before becoming manager of Bradford Park Avenue in May 1956, a post he held until November 1957.

Corkhill’s grandson Greg Tempest also became a professional footballer and has played first team football for Notts County in the current decade.
