Description

Milton, Staffordshire born wing half John Cope started playing football with Leek Alexandra in 1924 before joining First Division Bolton Wanderers in 1925, making his Football League debut against Burnley in September 1925. In his debut season he played in Bolton’s FA Cup quarter final against Nottingham Forest but was not selected for their victorious Final at Wembley. He made 28 appearances as Bolton finished fourth in the League Championship in 1926-27, and in his four seasons at Burnden Park he made 86 appearances before joining Port Vale in the summer of 1929 where he won the Third Division (North) Championship missing only two matches in his first season. He remained at the Old Recreation Ground for four more seasons but lost his regular place in 1932, remaining on the fringes of the first eleven thereafter, and he had played 129 times before his retirement in 1934.
