Description
Wednesbury, Staffordshire born centre forward John Cooper began his football career with Darlaston after the First World War from where he joined Third Division (South) club Southampton, making his Football League debut against Brentford on the last day of 1921. Understudy to Bill Rawlings, he made 3 appearances as Southampton won the Third Division (South) Championship in his breakthrough season, but only two further appearances the following season in the Second Division, both in matches against Notts County in December 1922. He clearly did enough to impress, as Notts County signed him in the summer of 1923, however he couldn’t make the breakthrough into The Magpies’ first eleven during 1923-24 and nothing is known of his career after leaving Meadow Lane.
