Description

Renfrew born outside left Jimmy Connor started his football career with junior clubs Paisley Celtic in 1924 and Glasgow Perthshire in 1925 before joining Scottish League St Mirren in June 1926, and such was his form he was selected for Scotland’s May 1930 European tour, winning his first cap for his country in a victory over France in Colombes. His selection attracted the attention of First Division Sunderland while at St Mirren, who signed him later the same month having scored 20 goals in 107 appearances for The Buddies.

He made his Football League debut against Manchester City in August 1930 and quickly established himself as a popular first team regular, and he was again selected for Scotland, playing in a 3-1 victory over Ireland at Ibrox in September 1931. He was also a member of Sunderland’s 1931 FA Cup semi final team that lost 2-0 to Birmingham at Elland Road, in a season in which he scored a career best 17 goals for The Wearsiders. including 6 in their FA Cup run. A much improved showing for Sunderland in 1933-34 saw him recalled to the Scotland fold, and he won two further caps against England and Ireland during the course of 1934.

Connor scored 11 goals in Sunderland’s 1934-35 campaign which saw them finish runners up in the League Championship, and he was then an ever present as Sunderland went one better and won the League Championship in 1936. Unfortunately he was badly injured in February 1937 and as a result missed the 1937 FA Cup Final, he didn’t make his comeback until May 1938 and thereafter his appearances were occasional. He retired in 1939 after 61 goals in 283 appearances for Sunderland.
